Does your connection meet SIP Trunking Requirements?

HostedPBX.com.au’s SIP Trunking service runs over your Internet connection. Network congestion or insufficient bandwidth may cause low call quality and frequent service disruptions.

For best results, your Internet connection should provide 128Kb of guaranteed dedicated bandwidth per user (with no packet loss).

Check if your internet service is up to task through a latency test:

pingtest
  1. Go to www.pingtest.net
  2. Click on the green BEGIN TEST button at the top of the page. If your security application blocks it, provide permission to run the test.

The ideal results are:

  • Line Quality of B or higher
  • MOS of 4 or above
  • Less than 100ms Ping
  • 0% Packet Loss

Failure to meet ALL of the above means your connection is likely to suffer from poor call quality, and does NOT meet our SIP Trunking minimum requirements.

Do you need a dedicated internet connection?

Despite strong results from your PING test, your data heavy activities is another factor that should be considered in determining if your internet service is up to task.

Data heavy users like graphic designers that upload larger files or businesses that require a large number of phone extensions have internet connections that are likely to suffer from congestion. As a result, the SIP Trunking service is likely to suffer from low call quality.

As a general rule, we recommend that you get a dedicated Internet connection for your service if:

  • you are a heavy data user
  • you want six or more phone extensions

What are the SIP Trunking bandwidth requirements?

Because your SIP Trunk connection runs over your broadband Internet, you need to ensure that your broadband plan provides sufficient download/upload limits.

Check the documentation for your IP PBX system to find the bandwidth requirement for calls. For example, a typical phone using the G729 Codec phone uses the following average amounts of bandwidth for audio calls:

  • 1 minute call = 234 Kilobytes
  • 1 hour call = 13.71 Megabytes

Take note that these estimates are based on the assumptions that only one phone is used at a time, and only for a single direction. Double these figures if your provider charges both uploads and downloads.

Ensure adequate upload/download limits

The quality of your SIP Trunking service relies on your internet connection. For best results, make sure that your broadband service meets the required download/upload limits.

Keep tabs on your broadband usage

Closely monitoring your broadband usage for the first few months is highly recommended. Keep your usage within the limits to keep your broadband provider from throttling your service down to dial up speed, and causing your system to suffer.
