Does your internet connection meet Hosted PBX requirements?

Your hosted business phone system runs over your internet service. Without sufficient bandwidth, your calls may suffer in terms of quality and lead to frequent disruptions.

To get the best results, a minimum of 128Kb of guaranteed dedicated bandwidth is required per user (with no packet loss).

Check if your internet service is up to task through a latency test:

pingtest
  1. Go to www.pingtest.net
  2. Click on the green BEGIN TEST button at the top of the page. If your security application blocks it, provide permission to run the test.

The ideal results are:

  • Line Quality of B or higher
  • MOS of 4 or above
  • Less than 100ms Ping
  • 0% Packet Loss

Failure to meet ALL of the above means your connection is likely to suffer from poor call quality, and does NOT meet our minimum requirements.

Do you have a dedicated internet connection?

Aside from good PING test results, there are other factors that have to be considered to determine if your connection is up to the job. Having a large number of extensions and normally doing data heavy activities may cause your connection to suffer from congestion, affecting your hosted business phone system.

We recommend a dedicated internet connection for your service if you:

  • Engage in data heavy tasks (download/upload large files, video conferencing, use multiple cloud apps)
  • Need six (6) or more phone extensions

What are the Hosted PBX bandwidth requirements?

Calculate your expected usage by using the figures below, while considering the amount of time you’ll be using your hosted business phone system. You may ask your broadband provider for help for more accurate results.

Refer to your phones’ manual to check the required bandwidth for calls. Our phones typically use the G711 Codec and require the following average bandwidth for audio calls:

  • 1 minute call = 234 Kilobytes
  • 1 hour call = 13.71 Megabytes

Take note that these estimates are based on the assumptions that only one phone is used at a time, and only for a single direction. Double these figures if your provider charges both uploads and downloads.

Ensure adequate upload/download limits

The quality of your hosted PBX service relies on your internet connection. For best results, make sure that your broadband service meets the required download/upload limits.

Keep tabs on your broadband usage

Closely monitoring your broadband usage for the first few months is recommended. Keep your usage within the limits to keep your broadband provider from throttling your service down to dial up speed, and causing your system to suffer.
