Does your connection meet Business VoIP requirements?

Business VoIP runs over your internet service. Without sufficient bandwidth, your calls may suffer in terms of quality and lead to frequent disruptions.

For optimum results, a minimum of 128Kb of guaranteed dedicated bandwidth is required per user (with no packet loss).

Perform the following test to check the quality of your connection:

pingtest
  1. Go to www.pingtest.net
  2. Click on the green BEGIN TEST button at the top of the page. If your security application blocks it, provide permission to run the test.

These are the results you should get:

  • Line Quality of B or higher
  • MOS of 4 or above
  • Less than 100ms Ping
  • 0% Packet Loss

Failure to meet ALL of the above means your connection is likely to suffer from poor call quality, and does NOT meet our minimum Business VoIP requirements.

Do you need a dedicated internet connection?

Aside from good PING test results, your data consumption also plays an important role in determining if your connection is up to the job. Having a large number of extensions or doing data heavy activities such as downloading/uploading large files, video conferencing, and using multiple cloud apps can cause your network to be congested. This ultimately affects the quality of your Business VoIP service.

We recommend a dedicated internet connection for your service if you:

  • Engage in data heavy tasks (i.e. graphic designer)
  • Want six (6) or more phone extensions

What are the Business VoIP bandwidth requirements?

Calculate your expected usage by using the figures below, while considering the amount of time you’ll be using your hosted business phone system. You may ask your broadband provider for help for more accurate results.

Refer to your phones’ manual to check the required bandwidth for calls. Our phones typically use the G711 Codec and require the following average bandwidth for audio calls:

  • 1 minute call = 234 Kilobytes
  • 1 hour call = 13.71 Megabytes

Take note that these estimates are based on the assumption that only one phone is used at a time, and only for a single direction. If your provider charges for both uploads and downloads, you will need to double these figures.
